Shepherd Safety Systems Technology Paving the Way in Landfill Methane Detection

Company’s direct source monitoring first of its kind in RNG industry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MIDLAND, Texas [June 25, 2024] – Shepherd Safety Systems, a leader in innovative safety and methane detection solutions, today announced a groundbreaking deal to provide direct source gas detection services for a network of RNG (Renewable Natural Gas) facilities constructed on landfills by Archaea Energy, a BP subsidiary.

This first-of-its-kind approach in the RNG industry signifies a significant step forward in capturing and utilizing landfill gas while ensuring environmental safety.

“We are thrilled to partner with Archaea Energy in this pioneering venture,” said Seth Long, CEO of Shepherd Safety Systems. “Our direct source monitoring offers unparalleled accuracy and real-time data, allowing for immediate response and mitigation of any potential hazardous gas leaks. This not only safeguards the onsite personnel but also optimizes RNG production.”

RNG facilities offer a sustainable solution by extracting methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from landfills and converting it into clean-burning fuel. Traditionally, landfills flare methane gas, significantly reducing its environmental impact, but not fully capturing its potential. Shepherd Safety Systems’ direct source monitoring technology goes beyond traditional methods by providing real-time data on both methane (CH4) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) emissions directly at the source.

“Safety is our top priority at Archaea. As we have quickly expanded our RNG footprint, the need to engage a gas monitoring provider has helped us ensure the safety of our personnel and environment,’ added Archaea Project Manager Jared Calabria. “Shepherd has provided its turnkey gas detection systems for several of our RNG locations across the U.S. and have given us a reliable solution to monitor our facilities 24/7.”

Shepherd Safety Systems’ technology presents a significant opportunity for the broader landfill industry. With over 2,000 landfills in the US and a few hundred with RNG facilities, the potential to expand methane capture and reduce emissions is vast.

Key Advantages of Shepherd Safety Systems’ Direct Source Monitoring for RNG Facilities:

Real-time data: Provides immediate insights into methane and H2S emissions, enabling prompt response.
Enhanced safety: Minimizes risk of leaks and environmental impact.
Optimized production: Ensures efficient capture of methane for RNG generation.

Shepherd Safety Systems encourages all RNG projects to embrace direct source monitoring for a safer, more sustainable future.
